Stunning South American Waterfalls

Some of the most beautiful and stunning waterfalls are located in the continent of South America
– the so-called “home of the world’s most beautiful girls”. Here are some of the most attractive and captivating South American waterfalls.

1.) Laja Falls – Chile


The lovely Laja Falls, known in Spanish as Salto del Laja, are located in the Laja River in the south-central part of Chile. It is situated between the cities of Chilian and Los Angeles. Laja Falls flow into a rocky canyon making it one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country.

2,) Kaieteur Falls – Guyana


Guyana is a small South American country and one of its natural attractions is the stunning Kaieteur Falls, a high-volume waterfall on the Potaro River located in Potaro-Siparuni region. The highest drop of the waterfall is 226 meters in height and a total height of 251 meters. This waterfall is one of the most powerful waterfalls in the world and is part of the Kaieteur National Park. It is the 26th most scenic waterfall in the world.

3.) Iguazu Falls – Argentina/Brazil


Undeniably, among the most popular and most beautiful waterfalls in the world are the Iguazu Falls which is shared by Brazil and Argentina. Two-thirds of these captivating waterfalls of the Iguazu River are located in Argentina.



The falls divide the river into the upper and lower Iguazu. This amazing waterfall system consists of 275 falls along 2.7 kilometers of the Iguazu River.

4.) Cachoeira da Fumaca – Brazil


The Cachoeira da Fumaça or Smoke Falls is one of the highest waterfalls in Brazil. This 353 meter high waterfall was discovered in 1960. It is located in Chapada Diamantina, a very attractive region for adventurers from all over the world with hundreds of caves and waterfalls.

5.) Tequendama Falls – Colombia


The Tequendama Falls, known in Spanish as Salto del Tequendama, is a beautiful geological wonder on the Bogota River in Colombia. This 132 m high waterfall is one of the country’s most popular tourist attractions. It was once a notorious site for suicides.

6.) Cuquenan Falls – Venezuela


Cuquenan Falls or Salto Kukenan is the second tallest waterfall in Venezuela after Salto Angel. It also holds the distinction as the world’s second tallest free-leaping waterfall and is the 11th highest river in the world. The falls drop in a single leap around 670 m.

7.) Gocta Cataract – Peru


The astonishing Gocta Waterfall, known is Spanish as Catarata del Gocta, is a perennial waterfall with two drops. It is located in Chachapoyas about 700 km northeast of Lima, the capital of Peru. It is 771 meters high and is considered as the world’s 3rd tallest free-leaping waterfall and the world's fifth-tallest waterfall.

8.) Angel Falls – Peru


The world’s tallest and probably the most popular waterfall is the Angel Falls of Peru. It is one of the country’s top tourist attractions together with Machu Picchu. This breathtaking waterfall is located in an isolated jungle and is known in Spanish as Salto Angel. It is 979 meters in height.
